Welcome to the Quad Blog :D

Hi!! My name is Tiger. I'm from Bangkok, Thailand. I would like to talk a little about myself as an introduction to the Quad blog. I am Thai and have been studying in RIS for 8 years (quite a long time). RIS is one of the top best International School in Thailand. It is also very expensive. In Thailand, just a few weeks ago, there was a flood crisis. Our school had to close for 40 days. Right now, we have an extended schedule and we also have to learn on Saturdays.

I have 4 family members:  Dad, Mom, me, and my sister. My sister is two years younger than I am. She is in grade 6 (year 7). I just turned 13 years old on October. My father is a business man. He owns a company which sells hydroponic vegetable. He is often very busy. My mother owns an apartment. I am in grade 8 (year 9) in Ms. Torie's Class. My favorite sport is volleyball and I like the football (soccer) team Manchester United. I also play the instrument Saxophone.

In Ms. Torie's class, we learn the subject Language Arts and Social Studies. Our theme for the term is "Identity" (We have 2 terms in one year). Right now, in Social Studies we are learning about the history of Europe, in the period of the Tudors and Stuarts. In Language Arts class, we are studying new vocabulary.

In Thailand, a very special event is coming up. That day is the "Father's Day" or Thailand's King Birthday. In Thailand, the king is very special because he is a very special person who helps the country in many ways.

Thai Innovation :D

I think Thai people are really bright to create inventions that can help people during the flood from simple objects that are easy to find. One of my favorites invention is the floating toilet. Waste disposal has been a problem during the flood, but excretion is a process of life so everyone waster take out their waste. With the floating toilet, there is a place for people to do their business without leaving their waste in the water and making the water unclean. Another invention that I think is very creative is the jet ski which is made from simple objects. Transportation is important during the flood because people need to go out and find food for their family. The jet ski can carry about 13 people, and it is not that hard to make. A small village could help each other to find objects to create one for the whole village where they can take a trip to the market together. I think these innovations come from people who have seen or study the flood and they could see what we need but couldn't find. From those points, they try to invent something that can be made easily by normal people but will also be useful. I want to thank all the people who create these invention that help the people who are in the flood! :D

Flood!! :(

Lately, there has been a lot of flood in Thailand. Many believe, that it is caused by people cutting down trees to build city and towns. Trees help suck in part of the water which helps protect the land from flood, but once we cut down those trees and create dams, we must we able to control the water. If the water is out of control, it will flood. This flood did not affect my family directly because my house isn't flooded, but it affects me in many way. First of all, I must waste money to buy sandbags, which will help prevent my house from being flooded. Also, due to the flood, the school is closed and which makes learning harder. My family still lives in Bangkok because my grandparents have to come live with us since their house is flooded. I think this crisis will make the country economics go down. Foreigners would not want to travel to Thailand since it is flooded. There are many needs for food, clothing, water, and shelter, I think this will cause the price of many things to go up. I have learned from Mrs. Torie that if there is high demand and the same supply, then the price would rise up. Lastly, I hope wish my friends and teachers who are reading this to have a safe time in Thailand.

Identity?

This quarter, Mrs. Torie has been talking about identity. What is it? In my definition, identity is who you are, and what makes you yourself and not someone else. Identity means you are the only one, one of a kind. Some part of me that is my identity is my personality, my name (full name), and my family. No one else in this world would have the same name, personality, and family as I do. In Mrs. Torie's class, some work that is about identity are the name story, the name tag, and my blog header.

Other things that reveal my identity are things that I like. I like the color light orange very much. The color orange reveal my identity because it shows that I like people who are nice and warm, like the sun. The book that I am currently reading "Ranger's Apprentice" also reveal my identity. The main character of the story is scared of ghost because he is special and can see them. Even though I am not special, I am really scared of ghost because I have seen them before.

Metacognition

Metacognition is thinking about thinking. Metacognition teaches us to utilize critical thinking skills. It helps activates and apply prior knowledge and learn deeper, flexible knowledge and skills. It also helps with problem solving effort. The two strategies of metacognition is metacognition conversation. metacognition conversation is conciously aware of mental activities and be able to be describe. Another strategy is think aloud. Think aloud is to make sense of text.

From the experience of the talk out talk strategies, I learned that it was harder to talk out loud than just just thinking but it also helps me think clearer. The difficulties I gain was that somethings I didn't say things I was thinking because I forgot. This helps me as a student to remember what I think more.
